If you’ve never done it before, picking the right color palette for your home can seem incredibly complicated and a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be. Here are a few simple tricks for choosing a color palette for your home.
You may think you don’t know what color schemes you like, but you do. Just look at your wardrobe! The colors you choose to wear are the colors you know you look good in and the colors you like to look at. When selecting your home colors, take a cue from your own clothes.
Once you know your colors, one effective scheme is to start with darker colors near the ground and work your way up to lighter colors as you move up toward the ceiling. This is reflective of nature, where you’ll find browns, blacks, and grays on the streets and roads, and, of course, white and blue in the sky.
A great way to make a color scheme work is to follow the 60-30-10 rule. Have 60 percent of the room decorated in the primary color, 30 percent in the secondary color and 10 percent in an accent color. Assuming you are using complementary colors, this almost always makes a room look great.
If you’ve already started furnishing a room, grab colors from upholstery patterns or the pattern of a large rug or wall tapestry. This will accentuate the piece which will, in turn, enhance the room.
You want to start your color designing with the “front” of the home — the areas that guests are going to see first, like the entryway, living room and dining room. Create a color scheme for those areas first and work backward. Pull colors from the “front” rooms, and if necessary, tone your selected color palette down for use in “back” rooms like a study or bedroom.
